Rupert Wates was born in London.
He has been a full time songwriter since 1992 and has written songs in all kinds of styles for all kinds of artists. During the 1990s he worked with jazz singer Liz Fletcher , recording the albums ‘Mellowmania’ and ‘Live in the Park,’ both released on the Sanctuary label, and ‘Blue Afternoons’ on Mainstem.
Moving to Paris in 2001, he developed his skills as a singer and performer and formed his own group. In 2005 he recorded the album ‘Sweet or Bitter Wine,’ his first as a solo artist. The album was released on the Mainstem label in autumn 2005.
Since September 2006, Rupert has been based in the USA. His music has found a warm reception in America. Between 2007 and 2011, he has won over 25 songwriting awards.
Rupert Wates plays between 120 and 150 live shows a year, and he has performed in every state in America. Audiences everywhere respond to his brand of acoustic, melodic art/folk: haunting songs that ring true.
Wates' albums 'Coast To Coast' (2007) and 'Dear Life' (2008) have gained outstanding reviews and both continue to be aired on college and mainstream radio all over the world.
In 2010 he released ‘Joe’s Café,” an album of 15 original songs based on true stories, each interpreted by a different vocalist, retelling the stories of ordinary American people. Through them we trace the story of America itself: through two world wars, the Dust Bowl depression, Vietnam and the struggle for Civil Rights, all the way to the present day. Recorded live in the studio in a single weekend, the album's warm sound evokes the welcoming atmosphere of an all-night café, where friends gather to share their stories. Featured virtuoso musicians on the recording include Darol Anger on violin and Michael Manring on bass.
‘Joe’s Café’ has been presented very successfully at the Fringe Festivals throughout North America including Hamilton (Ontario), Kansas City, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Victoria (British Columbia) and San Francisco, and in other venues from New York City to the Southeastern United States.
The show won Best Music Revue in the San Francisco Fringe Festival.

Billy The Liar: A High Energy Puppetry Farce for Kids of All Ages!
Billy is a Liar! Follow Billy and his friend Suzy as he tells more and more lies and get into more and more TROUBLE! Learn new vocabulary and life lessons! Plus Ponies! Told through the use of Czech style rod marionettes, toys, and over-sized toy theatre.
"Billy the Liar" was conceived by Keith Shubert of Toybox Theatre. His storytelling is defined by the surprising warmth of its comic darkness; Keith’s villains are often as sweetly naive as his protagonists and equally endearing to children and adults. A prolific artist, Keith was most prominently featured this past year in the stylish alternative publication Glubdub - Tales From The Underground.
Taking the lead on show construction is Madison J. Cripps of Cripps Puppets. Madison’s intricate marionettes spring to life in his hands with personalities almost as outgoing as his own. While some are friendly, like his foot-smelling rabbit or maudlin street sweeper Sammy, others are blood thirsty, egotistical, or dangerously insane. All of them share a need for attention and love that makes them both relatable and memorable to a crowd.
Valerie Meiss provides the sound and musical design for Billy the Liar. Though Valerie is an accomplished visual artist in her own right, she is best known as the accordion virtuoso with the rich operatic voice from the Hellblinki Sextet, a band that combines American folk, European cabaret, and punk rock with costumed spectacle.

Synergy Story Slam
»
02/06 @07:00
Tickets only available at the event, $5-10, cash or check only, please.
The Synergy Story Slam is Asheville's only open mic, community-based storytelling event!
The slam is an opportunity to share stories, to laugh, to learn, and to help out local organizations, all in an effort to build a stronger Asheville community. It's good for you to tell your stories, and it's good for us to hear them. And, of course, it's good for community organizations because part of the proceeds from door donations collected at the slam will be donated to a different local organization each week. Another big fat chunk of the door cash goes to the story slam winner--that's right friend, tell a story and it might be money in your pocket!
Slams happen every 1st and 3rd Monday night of each month. Doors open at 7pm, you can sign up to tell stories then. Stories begin around 7:30pm. Come early to grab dinner or a drink at the Magnetic Field, then get a good seat for the show. Come to tell a story, or come just to listen.
