27TH ANNUAL BERNSTEIN FAMILY CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR
DRAWN TO THE MAGNETIC FIELD IN ASHEVILLE
Asheville, NC – November 2, 2010 – They’re back! For the first time in two years, the Bernstein Family returns to Asheville, NC, bringing their hilarious 27th Annual Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular to The Magnetic Field, a brand-new café-bar-performance house in the River Arts District’s Glen Rock Depot, at 372 Depot Street. Performances December 8, 9, 11, 15-18, and 21-22 at 7:30 P.M. Special early show Friday, December 10, at 7:00 P.M. Special late shows Friday-Saturday, December 17-18, at 10:00 P.M. All seats are $12, with discounts for students, seniors, and groups of 10 or more. Please note: the show is PG-17.
Not seen locally since 2008, the ever-fertile Bernsteins (last represented by brothers Jack and Jimmy, but now with the entire family in tow) will bring new songs and sketches to the intimate Magnetic Field stage, while reprising such audience favorites as “Magic Corn,” in which Rudolph gets into the wrong feedbag, and “Union Elves,” in which Santa’s Helpers consider a strike on the worst possible day, at the worst possible moment.
Working closely with Magnetic Theatre Artistic Associates Mondy Carter and Karen Stobbe, the Bernsteins will also welcome to the stage such local favorites as Darren Marshall, Trinity Smith, Tracey Johnston-Crum, Erik Moellering, Magnetic Theatre Artistic Associate John Crutchfield, and more.
About The Bernstein Family: Brothers Jack and Jimmy burst into showbiz as The Bernstein Boys with Frances the Performing Wolverine!, and immediately helped end vaudeville. Audiences loved the boys but feared the wolverine. A few years and one court case later, they rubbed elbows with Rat Packers Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Joey Bishop, who had them run out of Vegas. Next came their big TV break, on The Tonight Show Starring Jack Paar. Unfortunately, Frances came down with distemper, and the disconsolate Bernsteins found themselves knocking back martini after martini and slurring the song they were born to write: “Merry Christmas Baby, Let Me Ring Your Jingle Bell.” Since then, through their annual show The Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular, they have wormed their way into the hearts, wallets, and dresses of thousands of eager fans. (Due to certain tariffs, ordinances, and restraining orders, the Bernstein Family will henceforth perform their Spectacular exclusively at The Magnetic Field.)
About The Magnetic Field (Chall Gray, Owner/Producer; Steven Samuels, Artistic Director): Asheville’s newest venue, open for lunch and dinner Mondays-Saturdays, will feature locally grown food, shade-grown coffee, local brews on tap, and full bar service. The Magnetic Theatre will provide a home for local writers, actors, directors, designers, musicians, dancers, and comedians, serve as the only production company in the Southeast dedicated exclusively to original works and is the River Arts District’s first professional theatre.
